Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Any open, level space, esp. one serving for public walks or drives.
Design


Aluminum sunshades don the roof of the Esplanade.
The building was designed by two architectural firms working in conjunction: by DP Architects of Singapore and the London-based, although the later left the project in May 1995[1].. The unique architectural design has been said to have an appearance similar to either a durian (a tropical fruit) or the eyes of a fly. Very often, locals casually refer to the Esplanade as "The Durian".












History

The Esplanade occupies the area of the former "Satay Club" a famous place where locals hang-out for food. It had been discontinued prior to the Esplanade's construction.
Officially open to public on October 12, 2002, Its development cost is close to SGD 600 million.



Outdoor Theatre


Fronting the 300m in length waterfront along Marina Bay, it can hold 450 people and hold up to 600 standing.
The space is ideal to hold outdoor music and dances accompanied by a great view of Singapore’s beauty along the Marina Bay.

Library esplanade


Library@esplanade, it is Singapore’s first performing arts library, was officially opened to public on 12 September 2002 by Mr Khaw Boon Wan, then Senior Minister of State for Transport and Information, Communication and the Arts.An all-in-one resource library for the performing arts, library@esplanade also provides information and services in the areas of dance, music, film and theatre.


The Esplanade, now referred to lovely as the Durians, attracts more than 7 million visitors a year, making it one of the attentively engaged arts centers in the world.



The Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay is designedby two architectural firms. It is used for concerts and performance of art holding 1600 seats for the concert hall and 2000 seats for the art performance theatres.

The Esplanade is an ideal place for people who appreciates music, dance and performances. It is just a stone’s throw away from City Hall’s MRT station, with a underpass linking you straight to Esplanade without getting contact with the weather.

Pubs, restaurants, hawker centres, souvenir shops are splendid choice to make after catching a performance. However, this place might not be suitable if you are looking for cheap and delicious food.


The library is a great place to settle yourself after a hectic day at school or work. With the vast collection of books to do our related research, students can easily get their projects done. Working adults can also get their ears plugged with music available in the library. The spacious library provides space for students to have their group study easily.


Catching a marvellous view of Singapore CBD (Central Business District) in the evening, you can get good pictures of Singapore.
